Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain Launch Trailer Likely Kojima’s Last

Snake’s swan song releases next week.

This is probably the last trailer for Metal Gear Solid we’ll see with the mark of Hideo Kojima on it. The launch trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain released today is reflective and melancholy in its first half, feeling like a fitting farewell from a creator.

It should go without saying that there some of the content in the video could constitute a spoiler for those who choose to view it, but that’s not the world we live in. So, if you’re planning to go into The Phantom Pain totally blind, don’t click it.

The trailer spends a good couple of minutes looking back on key moments from the franchise’s history, showing the many versions of Snake through the years. The latter half of the video features the latest bi-pedal artillery threat Snake will be facing, Metal Gear Sahelanthropus.

We had been conditioned over the years to disregard the suggestion that Hideo Kojima would ever actually stop making Metal Gear games. After every game, there would be a story about how the creator would be moving on to something else or passing the torch to a new team.

And then, there he was again, doing more Metal Gear. It’s strange to realize that, with the rebranding of Kojima Productions and the consequential removal of his name from the box and marketing materials, it may be for real this time.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain releases on September 1 for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
