Metroid Creator: Next Nintendo Console Will “Leave Mouths Open”

The creator of Metroid says that Nintendo’s next console will cause people to stop and stare in awe.

When Nintendo released the Wii, people may not have understood it at first, but tens of millions bought it anyway. Even though it was revolutionary to some extent, I wouldn’t say it was a jaw-dropping piece of technology. According to Metroid creator Yoshio Sakamoto, Nintendo’s next console will be shocking enough to cause mouths to open uncontrollably.

Speaking to 3DJuegos, Sakamoto gave a little bit of insight as to the reaction people will have for Nintendo’s next console, whatever it may be. He thinks it will definitely be something that surprises people.

“At Nintendo we always have the obligation to surprise users with a new game console,” he said. “We have never done what others have. We prefer to create something new that catches attention, and I think this will continue this time as well.”

Whether the next console out of Nintendo ends up using 3D or virtual reality or zapping us with a laser that teleports us into the videogame dimension armed with only a light gun, Sakamoto says: “Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with your mouth open.” Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has said that Nintendo is already working on the next Wii, though its release schedule for the console is totally unknown.

Sakamoto has been with Nintendo for quite a while, so he probably knows the basics of what Nintendo is working on. Nintendo pretty much pioneered the widespread use of motion control, and is doing glasses-free 3D with its 3DS that’s already blowing people’s minds. If it comes up with something totally new that nobody expects, we may see jaws drop yet again, but aside from holographic projection or time travel I’m not sure what Nintendo could be up to. Unless Sakamoto is referring to a new form of edible gaming that will literally require mouths to be open to enjoy it. You never know.
