Michael Bay Teams With Ubisoft For Ghost Recon Film

Michael Bay (Transformers red carpet)

Ubisoft needed help with their Ghost Recon film adaptation, so they hired noted explosion enthusiast Michael Bay to develop the flick.

According to Variety, Bay has signed an agreement with Ubisoft Motion Pictures and producer Warner Bros. to develop the Ghost Recon videogame license into some kind of viable film. Once that’s done, Bay may exercise the right to direct the movie, though that’s still a ways off.

For its part, Ubisoft seems very excited about this agreement. Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean Julien Barronet describes Bay as a “master at action movies,” and it’s apparent that the firm believes hiring Bay won’t negatively impact its stated desire to create films that are true to their pixelated source material.

As you may know, Ghost Recon marks the third big screen production from Ubisoft Motion Pictures, joining upcoming Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell adaptations.

I’m generally as dismissive of Bay as the next high school graduate, but honestly, this move is brilliant. Say what you will about the man, but Bay is a known name, and that should aid Ghost Recon in reaching theaters. Plus, Ghost Recon almost has to be a big action flick with superficially intelligent near-future technology backing the protagonists. That’s not just in Bay’s wheelhouse, it’s entirety of his wheelhouse.

Michael Bay does explosions and action very, very well, and while many see him as an idiot, I’m increasingly convinced that he just doesn’t care about his public image, and instead just really enjoys blowing stuff up on film. These should all be seen as positives for the Ghost Recon production.

There’s currently no release date (or window) for the Ghost Recon film adaptation, so expect more at some future date. Or not. You never can tell when these films deals will spontaneously collapse.
