Microsoft Warns About Modern Warfare 2 Beta Scam

If you receive a message about entering a top-secret Modern Warfare 2 beta, remember that things that seem too good to be true often are: Microsoft has warned Xbox Live users about being wary of potential scammers.

If you’ve been following the games press for the past year or so, you’re probably aware of a little game called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, one of the most eagerly-anticipated games of the year – perhaps of the decade. Many gamers are looking forward to Modern Warfare 2 so fervently, in fact, that some enterprising scammers are banking on their judgment being impaired at the thought of getting their hands on the game early.

On the latest Major Nelson podcast, Xbox Live Chieftain Stephen Toulouse warned about the nasty scammers in question: “We’re starting to see some people – evil doers – who are trying to impersonate people from Infinity Ward or Microsoft saying, ‘oh I’ve got the key a Modern Warfare 2 beta – a secret beta. If you just give me your password, I will get you in…'” he said.

“There is no beta,” Toulouse stated, hopefully trying to quash these rumors completely once and for all. “Don’t give out your password.”

That does seem like a bit of news straight out of Microsoft’s Obvious Department of Obviousness, but at least they’re watching out for the common-sense-impaired in the audience. Oh well, if you’re really, really looking forward to the game, there’s always the latest trailer to whet your appetite.
