Mortal Kombat Vs Street Fighter Could Be “Inevitable”

According to the producer of the latest Mortal Kombat game, we may see Sub-Zero square off with Chun-Li someday.

Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are two of the most popular fighting game franchises in history, though they couldn’t differ more in personality. Mortal Kombat is about extreme violence and fatalities, while Street Fighter has characters that are more cartoonish and silly. This may not stop them from coming together someday, if NetherRealm Studios producer Hector Sanchez knows what he’s talking about.

Crossover fighting games are all the rage at Capcom, with the newest title to take part actually merging Street Fighter with Namco fighting game rival Tekken. Sanchez seems to believe this company crossover could pave the way for Ken to go up against Scorpion, if it does well enough.

Sanchez, currently working on a new Mortal Kombat reboot, told CVG a Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter crossover is “inevitable,” but it would “depend on the success of Street Fighter X Tekken.” He also reveals that Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon actually pitched the crossover over ten years ago.

He knows that there’s one key problem that could stop a Mortal Kombat X Street Fighter from being what it should be, and that’s fatalities. Sanchez admits: “Obviously there are problems with that. I’m not sure Capcom would be happy with Scorpion ripping Ken’s head off.”

He’s hit it right on top of Ken’s head. Mortal Kombat is so uniquely violent that it can’t properly be put alongside another IP unless it’s spitting acid in its face and gouging its eyes out. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was a great concept, but we weren’t going to see Batman’s dismembered head no matter how cool that would have been. Is Capcom going to allow Ken and Ryu to be viciously murdered either? It should, but it probably won’t. And no, I can’t explain why it would be so fun to see Ken’s head sail through the air. It just would.
