Mortal Shell is a moody Soulslike with some impressive visuals, and it’s coming later this year. Publisher Playstack and developer Cold Symmetry announced the game with a trailer highlighting the deep action RPG’s brutal world, and it is currently scheduled to drop sometime in Q3 2020. The trailer below is more of a teaser than anything but still packs in tons of in-engine footage and a little bit of gameplay.
Mortal Shell looks downright depressing based on this first look, so Soulslike fans will probably feel right at home. Besides combat that is “strategic, deliberate, and unforgiving,” Cold Symmetry has a twist in the game that aims to keep gameplay fresh: the ability to control the shells of “Lost Warriors.”
Each Lost Warrior has a unique combat style to master and unique ability upgrades. As such with many games toting intense difficulty, Mortal Shell promises “formidable foes” as one of the game’s main features. A glimpse of some of these enemies can be seen in the trailer above.
Playstack and Cold Symmetry provided a summary of the game’s non-linear campaign:
Awakening as an empty vessel, you will enter into a shattered and twisted world where the remains of humanity wither and rot. Implored to do the bidding of the mysterious “Dark Father,” you must traverse this tattered landscape and track down hidden sanctums of devout followers. There, in Mortal Shell’s most hallowed grounds, you must overcome formidable foes and harvest the sacred glands. You won’t be truly alone when the dead litter your path: Scattered across this land are the remnant anima of lost warriors who can be inhabited to gain their unique abilities and knowledge of weapons. The Dark Father is desperate for you to complete your task — but to what end?
Cold Symmetry was founded in 2017 and is “composed of AAA veterans.” If you’re sold on the information shown today, you can learn how to access Mortal Shell’s beta test on the game’s website.
Mortal Shell comes to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this year.
