In spite of his company’s relationship with Microsoft, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says he wants to expand the online movie rental service to include the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii.
Netflix is currently an Xbox 360 exclusive, although rumors have bounced around since early this year that the company was looking to broaden its horizons. In March, Netflix conducted a survey strongly suggesting that a move to the Wii was in the works, while in April it posted an ad for an “Engineering Lead” with experience on all current consoles. Now, in an interview with Reuters, the chief executive of Netflix confirmed that the company wants to spread its wings and fly.
“Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs,” Hastings said. “So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts. Currently our Xbox deal is exclusive and we haven’t characterized it more than that.”
The company is also eyeballing mobile options, including Apple’s iPhone, but Reed said that while it’s “likely” to happen in the future, there’s nothing planned for the near future. “We are not focused on mobile yet, but (instead) on the TV, on Blu-ray and on the video game consoles,” he said. “We will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone.”
