Netflix Expanding Service To Other Consoles?

image

Netflix has indirectly confirmed that they’re at least considering expanding their service beyond the Xbox 360 by posting a job listing looking for someone to lead a team working with multiple consoles.

The listing, which is for a “Engineering Lead” for the gaming platforms department, asks for someone with “deep experience developing and testing media rich applications on current generation gaming consoles.” Notice that plural at the end of the sentence. Netflix currently has a home on a single console – it appears that they’re now looking to expand their streaming service to multiple consoles.

The job specifically requires experience with working on multiple systems. “You have years of experience both building and leading the development of games on the current generation gaming consoles,” Netflix writes. “You are familiar with several of those consoles, the technical hurdles associated with them, and the means of navigating those hurdles.”

While we can’t say this is complete confirmation that Netflix is coming to Wii and PS3, it’s pretty darn close. It lends a lot of credence to previous rumors about the service coming to Wii. Those rumors said that Netflix was surveying interest in a service for the Wii that would allow users to stream movies if they bought a disc that would enable the functionality and would have to be inserted every time they used it. So there’s already that. As for what it means for Netflix on PS3, well, it means at least that Netflix is considering it.
