Netflix is entering the gaming space, and it’s going to start soon, according to Bloomberg. Its source claims Netflix will offer video games as a new programming genre alongside its current offerings “within the next year,” and the tentative plan is to offer the content at no additional charge. Additionally, Mike Verdu is joining Netflix as vice president of game development, having previously served at EA’s mobile division and having helped build a roster of Oculus content at Facebook.
Word that Netflix was looking to go all-in on video games came in May when a report from The Information claimed that the streamer was on the lookout for someone to oversee the company’s push into video games. Netflix has started associating itself with game-related content through the last few years, with shows such as Castlevania, The Witcher, and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness attracting gaming audiences. The streamer will soon continue The Witcher with the show’s second season, and a live-action Resident Evil show is on the way as well. A new Castlevania show that focuses on Richter Belmont, Splinter Cell, Sonic Prime, Assassin’s Creed, The Cuphead Show!, and more are also in the works.
Even if Netflix’s entry into video games takes time pan out, expect more shows to make their way to that platform for at least the next few years.
