New Cities Brings Unprecedented Scale to the City-Builder Genre

New Cities

Lone Pine Games has dropped a new trailer showing off the unique ambition of its upcoming city-builder, New Cities.

One of the most impressive qualities is the sheer scale on display, with the map shown towards the end of the trailer far eclipsing anything found in SimCity or Cities: Skylines, though the developer has provided no estimate as to how big the cities can grow.

Beyond its scope, New Cities aims to offer a fresh approach to urban development management. Each city begins as a rural township, with growth being tied to several key metrics, the most significant of which are prosperity, value, and density. According to Lone Pine, at the core of the game is the Prosperity System: a dynamic economy simulation that determines how prosperous an area is by accessibility variables.

At the time of writing, the game is in the last few hours of an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, which has already surpassed its goal of $10,000.

No release date has been set for the project, though the developer writes that it “is fully developed and almost ready for players to enjoy.” A closed alpha test is scheduled to begin in January and run until an early access release scheduled to occur in spring.
