It feels like we’ve been writing about Morbius trailers for decades at this point, but the other Sony’s Spider-Man Universe anti-hero is set to finally, finally get his day in the sun shadows. Sony has dropped a new Morbius trailer for the film, which is ramping marketing back up as we near its hopefully final release date.
The film stars Jared Leto as the titular Morbius, a genius scientist who messes with things he shouldn’t in order to find a cure for his disease and is turned into what is basically a vampire. If the film turns out anything like Venom or its sequel, that’s pretty much all the depth of plot we’re going to get from it, but as the new Morbius trailer shows, Sony is going hard with building out the Sinister Six connections by bringing in both Michael Keaton as the Vulture and making plenty of references to Venom. It will be interesting to see, especially with Venom officially crossing over into the MCU, if the film plays hard into the cheesiness of Venom or attempts to turn Sony’s splinter universe into something more serious. Remember that this film was originally slated to release before Venom: Let There Be Carnage, so its connective tissues my seem a bit out of date.
Budget film director Daniel Espinosa is directing the movie so it really could go either way, though the cast for the film is stacked. Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson are joining in as a slew of characters trying to come to terms with a vampire killing people (though we shouldn’t confuse that with the half-vampire who kills people). As the trailer indicates, Morbius may play a bit more with the anti-hero angle than Venom does, which is probably good given that both movies basically feature a “hero” torn between a dark and light side. Although, Morbius doesn’t look like it will be touching the rom-com genre in any way.
Morbius will release, finally, on January 28.
