Even if you’re a famous actor with a magnificent beard, you can still name your daughter after a videogame character.
Actor Robin Williams has been a Legend of Zelda fan since 1987 – in fact, he was enough of a fan to name his daughter after the series’ titular princess when she was born in 1989. The commercial you see here, for Nintendo’s 3DS remake of the legendary Ocarina of Time, is all about that name.
In it, Robin fondly reminisces about the day he met his daughter Zelda, and how he grew to become a hero and to save her kingdom from the forces of evil. That doesn’t sound much like Zelda’s actual life story, of course.
In all seriousness, while this sort of commercial could have come off as campy and trite, it actually manages to come off as genuinely sweet and cute. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Robin Williams is rocking one of the most impressive beards I have seen on anyone in a very long time.
Of course, it’s not like Nintendo really needs to try to convince people to pick up Ocarina of Time. That game sells itself.
Update: Nintendo has released a longer video with interviews with both father and daughter on the origin of the name Zelda, and the fond memories both have with the franchise.
