At the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase, Square Enix announced that the 2017 PlatinumGames action RPG Nier: Automata is getting a Nintendo Switch port, with the End of the Yorha Edition launching with an October 6, 2022 release date. Even though this news was leaked yesterday, the announcement still comes as a quirky surprise, five years out from the game’s original release.

When Nier: Automata launched on PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017 and then on Xbox One on 2018, it received critical acclaim. Not only was the action visceral and satisfying, as fans have come to expect from PlatinumGames, but the storytelling was thoughtful and nuanced, coming from the wild mind of Square Enix’s Yoko Taro. Nier: Automata was a belated sequel to the 2010 Square Enix game Nier, which received a muted response at release. That game garnered a cult following though, culminating in the 2021 remake Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, which was also developed by PlatinumGames.
The Nier franchise has since spun off into various other mediums, like novels and manga, but Yoko Taro has also kept busy with other video games. Most notably, Yoko Taro developed the Voice of Cards series, which is also available on Switch.
Nier: Automata is yet another great get for Nintendo Switch from Square Enix, fitting in nicely with other upcoming releases like Live A Live and Front Mission 1st: Remake.
