Nintendo has announced a new NES game and two SNES games have just joined Nintendo Switch Online, and they’re not quite beloved classics. Pinball has joined the NES library of Switch Online, and Congo’s Caper and Rival Turf! have joined the SNES library.
Pinball is exactly what it sounds like — it’s pinball, made by Nintendo. Meanwhile, Congo’s Caper is a sidescrolling platformer from Data East about a monkey boy exploring assorted exotic environments, and it’s basically a sequel to Joe & Mac, which is already available on NSO. Lastly, Rival Turf! is a beat ’em up from Jaleco that has been described as derivative of Final Fight. Out of these three new NES and SNES additions to Nintendo Switch Online, the biggest thing they have in common is that none of them are Super Mario RPG.
Jokes aside, it’s not the most inspired lineup, though Congo’s Caper is probably pretty solid. Japan received a slightly different group of games, which is often the case. This time, Japan received the platformer Umihara Kawase instead of Congo’s Caper.
The NES and SNES libraries within NSO have been struggling lately with lackluster releases, with the major exceptions being EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound. However, the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis libraries included in Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack have fared significantly better. Most recently, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards joined the N64 lineup, and Sonic Spinball and Shining Force II headlined recent additions to the Genesis library.
There is reason to believe Game Boy Advance games may join the service in the future as well.
