Nolan Planning Inception Videogame

The idea to turn Inception into a videogame has been planted in Christopher Nolan’s mind.

Aside from an overly-long scene involving floating dudes, Inception is a pretty awesome movie. Director Christopher Nolan hopes to bring some of that awesome to the game industry with a possible videogame adaptation.

Variety reports that Nolan recently announced plans for the videogame at a press conference in Rome that basically also just trumpeted how much money Inception made at the box office so far ($753 million). In his comments, he seemed to let on that this wouldn’t be a quick movie-to-game cash-in.

“What we are looking at doing is developing a videogame based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can’t fit into a feature film,” Nolan said. “That’s something we’ve been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years.”

So, according to Nolan, the Inception game might not even feature the same characters as the movie as it’s just set in the same universe, though it’s likely to at least contain references. A “couple of years,” if referring to development time, is a pretty good number to spend on making a quality experience. However, it could also refer to Nolan’s intention to not even start for a couple of years, which means the game wouldn’t be out for a while.

If you thought an Inception card game sounded cool, just imagine what could be done with a full-fledged electronic version. Inception is rare in that it combines action, espionage, and gunplay with landscapes that could potentially take the form of anything. A Nolan-backed game set in the movie’s universe is an intriguing possibility, and who knows, maybe it’ll even take place in our own minds.
