Paper Mario: The Origami King is giving us the next chapter in Nintendo’s paper spinoff series, and it’s coming to Nintendo Switch this summer. Nintendo dropped an announcement trailer and combat gameplay footage for the July 17 title without warning, finally giving fans more Nintendo 2020 content to wait for. Watch the reveal trailer below.
Paper Mario: The Origami King will be the series’s debut on Switch, demonstrating some new visuals and mechanics in the process. If you couldn’t tell from the game’s title, the two-sided origami tale will play a key role in this entry’s gameplay and story. While some examples only see enemies being given the folded treatment, the most notable addition might be Mario’s 1000-Fold Arms that allow him to solve various puzzles through interaction with the environment.
While past series staples like partners seem to be returning, it’s hard to say how much of a role RPG mechanics will have in the game. Nintendo’s U.S. website lists the game as an action adventure, while the U.K. eShop listing describes it as an adventure RPG. Either way, you can take a slightly longer look at the game’s combat in the quick video below.
As exciting as a new Paper Mario can be on the surface, the game’s existence means so much more. In March (and January before that), multiple reports claimed a new entry in the paper series would find its way to Switch in 2020. Many of these same reports added that Nintendo has plans to remaster multiple 3D Mario titles for the Super Mario Bros. 35th anniversary, including Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Paper Mario: The Origami King doesn’t outright confirm that we’ll see these remasters, but the likelihood has undeniably increased.
Paper Mario: The Origami King is almost exactly two months away, so you won’t have to wait long before going hands-on when it comes to Switch.
