Sharks, ships, and swashbuckling are on their way in the new Pathfinder Adventure Card Game set, debuting at Gen Con.
I’ve been playing the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords for a few months now, and it’s a great way to get the flavor of Pathfinder without needing a GM. The game distills the pen-and-paper version of the roleplaying game into a fast-playing card-based challenge, where player characters are represented by individual decks that change over time. Paizo has released a preview of the set, Skull & Shackles, on their blog, introducing some of the new cards and their powers. Inspired by the Skull & Shackles Adventure Path for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, the new set brings the heroes to the high seas to face pirates, gunslingers, and huge sea monsters. Skull & Shackles adds seven new characters classes and ships, a new aspect to the game which can add bonuses, fight other ships, and be damaged by enemies.
The base Skull & Shackles set adds four character classes from Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, the Oracle, the Gunslinger, the Magus, and the Swashbuckler. The Bard, Figher, and Rogue classes will also be included in the base set. The Skull & Shackles Charcter Add-On Deck will include the Druid, and introduce three new classes, the Alchemist, the Witch, and the Warpriest. A major change from the Rise of the Runelords set is the addition of ships and ship combat. When exploring a location, characters can encounter enemy ships, which must then be defeated. If undefeated, the party’s ship takes damage. Ships offer important bonuses, especially for ship combat, so keeping a ship in good repair is important for the party. Defeating enemy ships gives the players a chance to roll for plunder and acquire great new loot.
Skull & Shackles is the second Pathfinder Adventure Card Game set. The Skull & Shackles set is completely compatible with characters from the Rise of the Runelords set. New adventure decks for Skull & Shackles are planned for monthly releases, and the base set with debut at Gen Con 2014 in August. Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Skull & Shackles Base Set, accessories, and adventure decks are currently available for preorder.
