PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst has commented on Sony’s recent minority stake investment in Elden Ring and Bloodborne developer FromSoftware, suggesting that future collaborations could see the studio working with Sony’s movie and TV branch, PlayStation Productions. As part of an interview with Reuters, he noted that deals with the studio, which struck gold with the Dark Souls series, will first focus on the gaming side of things. Still, Hulst added that a FromSoftware and PlayStation Productions project is a possibility.
“You should think of collaborations on the game development side first and foremost, but it’s also not unthinkable with our PlayStation Productions efforts that we explore opportunities,” Hulst said.
It should come as no surprise to hear that Sony has an interest in pursuing adaptations of its many gaming properties. If Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Dark Souls, etc. were to get TV or movie retellings, they would join Sony’s growing family of existing adaptations, including the Tom Holland Uncharted film, a Ghost of Tsushima movie, and the Twisted Metal TV show. There’s also a God of War show on the way, and more recently, we learned that David Harbour is to star in Neill Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo movie. The next adaptation we can expect to see is The Last of Us on HBO, which aims to bring Naughty Dog’s narrative-driven survival horror series of the same name to small screens next year.
Following the massive and immediate success of Elden Ring this past March, FromSoftware expressed its interest in expanding the IP beyond the game, so a movie or TV collaboration with PlayStation Productions would make sense if it came to pass.
