One of the boldest pieces of small-screen science fiction has met its end today, as HBO Max has canceled Raised by Wolves after two seasons (via Deadline). No reason was given for the decision not to move ahead with a season 3, with HBO Max’s statement serving only to thank the creative team behind Raised by Wolves.
Despite the cancellation, there may yet be some hope for fans. Following the announcement, series star Abubakar Salim took to Twitter to confirm that the production company, Scott Free Productions, is actively pursuing avenues to continue the series elsewhere.
“You see, we’re in a unique position: we have a fully fleshed out and planned storyline, a Goliath of a production team behind us, incredible reception from critics and reviewers alike, and most crucially, a community base that is so strong internationally, it can not be ignored,” Salim wrote. “So I’m asking for action. I see the pure love, passion and questions (too too many) that arise DAILY on Twitter for RBW. I’m now asking that you continue to, and with even more vigour, show that genuine love here, there, and everywhere as we search for that new home.”
Raised by Wolves followed a pair of androids, known only as Mother and Father, in their attempts to raise a group of human children on a new planet, Kepler-22b, without what they see as the corrosive influence of religion. That mission is jeopardized when a ship load of humans from a religious faction arrives. It was a wild, imaginative show with clear riffs to Executive Producer Ridley Scott’s earlier work on Alien, exploring big themes like human nature, religion, duality, and parenthood.
The second season premiered back in early February. If or when there will be a Raised by Wolves season 3 might be in fans’ hands at this point.
