Rappin’ Against Piracy in Don’t Copy That 2

The 1992 anti-piracy video Don’t Copy That Floppy is being updated for the digital age with a new video that features a SWAT team, your mom, hard times in prison and a very special surprise bonus.

Videogame piracy is hardly a new problem. For as long as there have been games, there have been people who copy and share them with others. As far back as 1992, in fact, the problem was considered serious enough that the Software Publishers Association released a [public service announcement urging people not to share games entitled Don’t Copy That Floppy, featuring a memorable performance by rapper MC Double Def DP the Disc Protector.

I have no idea what kind of impact the video had on piracy figures – very little, I would guess – but it appears that the Software and Information Industry Association sees something it likes in MC Double Def. The organization is bringing back the Disc Protector and updating the concept for the current generation, with plans to unleash a new video later this summer. A teaser for the upcoming public service announcement is available now.

While it’s every bit as hilariously cheesy as the 1992 video, Don’t Copy That 2 is far more entertaining in every possible way. I don’t want to spoil any surprises because this is something that really needs to be experienced with an open mind, but I will say this: Watch it all the way to the end. You won’t be disappointed.
