Rebel Wolves is a Warsaw-based indie game studio formed by some of the talent behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, and it’s already hard at work on a AAA dark fantasy RPG for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S. The pack of developers is led by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who served as game director for The Witcher 3 and secondary game director on Cyberpunk 2077. Aside from promising a working environment devoid of hostility and harsh hours, Rebel Wolves is most interested in “creating vibrant virtual worlds, filled to the brim with powerful emotions and unique experiences.” The untitled story-driven project is being built with Unreal Engine 5, and you can catch a first look at concept art below.

“For all of us here at Rebel Wolves, video games were always something we felt destined to do—something ingrained in our DNA,” Tomaszkiewicz said in a statement. “Personally, I couldn’t be happier to have banded together with friends who share this passion. We’re developing a video game we’d like to play in a way that games should be made. We want to evolve the cRPG genre by creating unforgettable stories and stirring deep emotions, all while working as a tightly knit team united by a shared goal and ambition.”

Rebel Wolves will remain “small and agile” as its team focuses on the simple goal of staying happy throughout development. A desire to keep team numbers low comes after Tomaszkiewicz’s breakaway from the heavily criticized AAA game development atmosphere plaguing the industry. Other members at the indie studio come from backgrounds in games such as Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales and Shadow Warrior 2. The Polish indie team is currently growing as it plans to fill additional positions in the coming months.

“In order to create truly great games, we won’t chase trends or numbers,” narrative director and main writer Jakub Szamałek says. “Our goal is clearly defined: to create memorable games, tell moving stories, and evoke visceral emotions. It’s ambitious, true—and I’m glad it is. Art needs ambition. I don’t want to create another game. I want to work on titles people will remember.”

Other founding members include animation director Tamara Zawada, art director Bartłomiej Gaweł, CFO Michał Boryka, and studio head Robert Murzynowski. Stay tuned for more from Rebel Wolves as it continues creating a genre-defining RPG experience without crunch.
