Remember when Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition launched last year? Perhaps you are trying to forget due to the compilation’s various problems. It seems the general gaming public’s panning of the title has had consequences for Rockstar Games’ remaster plans. According to GTA insider Tez and corroborated by Kotaku, a remaster for Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA 4) and a remaster for Red Dead Redemption have been shelved.
Here is what Tez initially tweeted yesterday:
As per a reliable source with clear accuracy on Rockstar plans, remasters of GTA IV & RDR1 were on the table a few years ago, but Rockstar chose not to proceed with the projects in mind.

Kotaku added some clarity to the story. Its sources state Rockstar Games is fully committed to developing Grand Theft Auto VI at the moment. All planned remasters have been suspended due to this and the poor reception of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. However, a remaster of Red Dead Redemption or GTA 4 isn’t out of the question entirely. They may still happen in the future once GTA 6 launches.
It’s important to note the remastered trilogy of GTA games still sold millions of copies, despite its bugs. Rockstar Games seems to have taken more notice of the backlash regarding quality than the actual sales. The company is obviously hoping GTA 6 blows everyone’s minds and wants people to forget how much it botched the revamp of its PS2 games. Personally, I can’t forget how much Rockstar didn’t care about the quality of the trilogy and am hesitant to see it remake any more of its beloved IP.
