Return To Ostagar on January 5th

EA has announced that the new downloadable content for Dragon Age: Origins, titled Return to Ostagar, will be available on January 5th.

The first downloadable content for DAO released after the game launched on Nov. 3, Return To Ostagar allows the player to “reclaim the honor” of King Cailan of Ferelden. The DLC will be available for the Xbox 360 and the PC on the 5th, for 400 Microsoft or BioWare points, but will be released for the PS3 later in January for $4.99 on the Playstation Store.

Offering a quest to go back to the fateful location of the battle at Ostagar, where the Grey Wardens were nearly massacred, the player will apparently learn about King Cailan’s secret motives and find the armor and weapons he bore.

BioWare is committed to supporting DAO for a while. “We are thrilled at the way the fans have embraced Dragon Age: Origins and we’re excited to welcome them back into the game,” said Aaryn Flynn, General Manager and Vice President, BioWare Edmonton. “Return to Ostagar represents BioWare’s commitment to providing a steady stream of compelling post release content as we continue to expand the Dragon Age universe.”

As with a lot of epic fantasy, the devil is in the details, and DAO delivers a complex world with hints of more story beyond the borders of Ferelden. Who are the Qunari? Are there other surviving dwarf cities? Are the Orlesians really analogous to stuck-up Frenchmen?

While I will probably play Return to Ostagar, I’m not that excited to go back to parts of the story that have already been told. And I keep hovering over that grayed out menu item on the splash page: Other Campaigns. Will Bioware be releasing brand new stories anytime soon?
