Rick and Morty Anime Series Coming from Tower of God Director

Rick and Morty Anime Series Coming from Tower of God Director Takashi Sano Adult Swim Cartoon Network

When Cartoon Network announced that it’d basically renewed Rick and Morty until the heat death of the universe, you probably thought you couldn’t possibly get any more of the show. You were wrong. THR reports that Adult Swim has ordered a Rick and Morty anime spin-off series from director Takashi Sano, who directed the anime adaptation of Tower of God. The series will be 10 episodes long, but it isn’t clear if it is planned as a one-off season or something that could be ongoing over multiple seasons.

“The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion,” Sano said in a statement. “It’s such a life(-)affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception. I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”

This is neither the first time Rick and Morty has gone anime nor the first time Sano has directed the show. During the extended break the series took before the last season came out, Rick and Morty dropped multiple online short films, some of which were anime. Sano directed two of them, “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider” and “Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil),” to high praise and million of views on the internet. Both of those shorts were in Japanese and subtitled, so it’s possible this new series will be the same.

Rick and Morty: The Anime will not be connected to the original show, though it will adapt themes and storylines from the series. Of course, given Rick and Morty takes place in a world with infinite Ricks and infinite Mortys, the series will obviously be part of that multiverse. Just how closely connected they’ll be to the Rick and Morty in the regular series is the question.
