Rocksteady Unveils Arkham City’s Robin

He might not be fighting alongside Batman himself, but that doesn’t mean that Robin isn’t ready for Arkham City.

We’ve known for a long time that Batman wasn’t going to be on his own in Arkham City – Catwoman was part of the equation pretty much from day one – but it’s only recently that we’ve learned that Batman’s stalwart sidekick Robin would also be joining him in the lawless ghetto. But thanks to Rocksteady, we now know a lot more about the Boy Wonder’s role in the game, from what he looks like, to exactly which Robin it is.

In a post on the official Arkham City forums, community manager Sarah Wellock answered a series of frequently asked questions. The person under the mask is Tim Drake. As fans of the comics will know, Drake is the third person to wear the Robin mask, following in the footsteps of Dick Grayson, the original Robin who has since struck out on his own as Nightwing, and Jason Todd, who died at the hands of the Joker, only to return years later and becoming the antihero The Red Hood. Rocksteady has also included a nod to the comic book continuity – Drake is not the current Robin – by including his Red Robin costume as an alternate skin.

Sadly, Robin will not be playable in the main game, but players will be able to use him in any of the main game’s challenge maps, as well as the two exclusive maps that are unlocked along with the character. He comes with his own unique set of gadgets – presumably including the staff he’s carrying in the picture – and moves. Currently, he remains a Best Buy exclusive, although Wellock said that retail partners for other territories would be announced soon.

As a comic book fan, it’s both interesting and exciting that Rocksteady picked Drake rather than the arguably more famous Dick Grayson as its Robin. Hopefully this means that if/when Arkham City sees a sequel, we might get to see Nightwing. It’s probably too much to ask for Batgirl and Azrael as well, but Rocksteady may yet surprise us.

Arkham City comes out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 18th.
