Rumor: Sony Clearing Out UK PS3 Stock

UK game retailers have reportedly been told to not expect any new PS3 stock until September, in order to clear what is on store shelves. Gee, it’s almost like Sony is planning on releasing a new model or something.

MCV UK reports that two of the UK’s “leading national retailers” have claimed that Sony has told to not expect any further PlayStation 3 shipments until the end of the month:

“Sourcing PS3 stock has been a challenge for the last two to three weeks,” said an unnamed spokesperson. “There are obviously lots of rumors flying about as to why that might be. I don’t think it’s to do with demand, though. Sales are low at the moment and have been for a while. We’ve been told not to expect any further hardware deliveries until September.”

This comes a week in advance of Sony’s press conference at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany next Tuesday, the 18th. One might hazard a guess that Sony will be announcing something at said press conference – that there may well be a reason to be clearing current PS3 stockpiles. A reason that has been a persistent rumor for quite some time now, with more and more evidence piling up in support of the idea.

(Here’s a hint. It starts with an “S,” and ends with a “lim PS3.”)

Yes, there’s nothing officially confirmed, and we won’t know for sure either way until next week, but … really? Come on, at this point it’s practically a given. There is so much evidence supporting the idea that Sony will be announcing the slim PS3 – plus a price cut for the console – in Cologne next week, that it would be a much bigger surprise if, uh, they didn’t announce it.
