Despite the release of the PlayStation 5 on the horizon, Sony may skip out on E3 again in 2020 according to a new rumor. Based upon information from its sources, VGC is saying Microsoft is anticipating Sony’s absence at E3 2020, and as such, the Xbox team is “upping its plans accordingly.”
Additionally, VGC talked to industry analyst Michael Pachter, who corroborated the claim that Sony has no plans to attend E3 this year: “As far as I know, they don’t plan to attend. I think that’s a huge mistake, as their ‘focus on the consumer’ is not inconsistent with their attendance at the premier industry trade show. I hope they change their minds but am skeptical.”
When Sony announced it would not make an appearance at E3 2019, some fans assumed the decision was made in order for the tech company to make a bigger splash at this year’s show with more PlayStation 5 news. Sony has been more outspoken about the next generation of consoles this time around, with the company already having unveiled many of the PlayStation 5’s new features on its own terms. If these E3 rumors turn out to be true, then perhaps Sony has its own events planned to serve as replacements.
E3 is only six months away, so rumors and new announcements will only ramp up until the show happens in June. Until Sony makes a formal announcement regarding its presence at E3 2020, it’s probably best to keep expectations in check.
