Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman ‘Reveal’ Deadpool 3 Timeline & MCU Connection

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reveal big timeline and MCU story connection details for Deadpool 3 with Wolverine.

Ever since Disney scooped up Fox and got the rights back to almost all of the Marvel comic book characters, a looming question has hung over the Marvel Cinematic Universe: What the @#!$# were they going to do with Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool? The answer, as it came yesterday, was to get Hugh Jackman back to star as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 across Ryan Reynolds — and now the two have “revealed” some MCU story details and the movie timeline as well.

Of course, that’s not exactly true. Reynolds and Jackman note that Logan takes place in 2029 and is a “totally separate thing” timeline-wise, which opens the door for Wolverine to appear in Deadpool 3, but then the audio cuts out of the video and music starts playing as Reynolds and Jackman “reveal” the rest of the action-packed MCU story details that we can’t hear. In other words, they reveal almost nothing. We’ve been trolled, albeit in a lovable way.

We’ve had some hints over the years that Disney would indeed be bringing Reynolds and Deadpool into the MCU somehow, but the R-rated nature of the films left many in doubt if they’d actually do it. Money seems to speak louder than image, though, as yesterday Reynolds announced that Deadpool 3 would release on September 6, 2024 with Hugh Jackman along for the ride.

This, of course, isn’t the first time Reynolds and Jackman will play the characters on screen together, as they faced off against each other in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but this is the first time it most likely won’t suck when they do it. Despite moving to the PG-13 world of the MCU, Deadpool 3 is set to R-rated according to Kevin Feige himself. Deadpool series screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are returning for this third installment. Shawn Levy, who has collaborated with Reynolds on Free Guy and The Adam Project, is coming on board to direct, and… well, Wolverine is going to be in it. That is a kind of big surprise since Jackman has repeatedly said that Logan was his final performance in the role, as Logan was a fitting, touching, and fantastic exit for the character who died at the end of it.

Although, in addition to the timeline quirk that Reynolds and Jackman noted in today’s video, Logan took place in Fox’s X-Men universe, so really they can just claim it as not canon if they want. The real question is what convinced Jackman to return (other than his friendship with Reynolds) and just how much of a return it will be. If it’s just a cameo, there’s going to be a lot of pissed-off fans out there.
