Turns out that despite all that’s going on, we’re possibly living in one of the good universes as Sam Raimi has officially confirmed that he will be directing the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Back in February, which somehow was only about two months ago, reports came in that Raimi was in talks for the film, but no confirmation was ever given. Now, while talking with ComingSoon, the director himself revealed that he is indeed working on the project.
The site was chatting with Raimi about his new Quibi series, 50 States of Fright, but he just happened to mention his reference to the character of Doctor Strange in the seminal Spider-Man 2. The director answered by casually confirming that he is indeed working on the Doctor Strange sequel.
“I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me(;) he was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters,” Raimi said. “He was so original, but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2 I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.”
Raimi came into the sequel when Scott Derrickson left the project citing differences between his and Marvel’s vision. Derrickson directed the first Doctor Strange film but didn’t give it much of a personal stamp, so his departure didn’t upset too many people. Raimi coming onto the project, however, blew up the internet. As the director of the 2000s Spider-Man trilogy, Raimi helped usher in the current superhero onslaught we currently have, and the director is a massive comics fanboy as well.
The second Doctor Strange film will see Benedict Cumberbatch return to the role and also heavily feature Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. Not much more is known about the movie, especially since Loki head writer Michael Waldron is rewriting the screenplay right now.
More important than all of this, however, is the tweet below hinting that Bruce Campbell could once again be returning to the world of Marvel superheroes. Now to figure out what multiverse “The Classic” will show up in.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently scheduled to release on November 5, 2021.
