A Scott Pilgrim anime series is in development at Netflix and Universal Studio Group division UCP. The show has yet to receive a full series order, but original graphic novel creator Bryan Lee O’Malley is attached as a writer and executive producer, alongside Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival showrunner BenDavid Grabinski. If the series comes together, Science SARU will do animation, and Eunyoung Choi will serve as producer while Abel Gongora directs.
Scott Pilgrim began life as a video game-inspired graphic novel before eventually receiving movie and video game adaptations as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The IP’s cult-classic status precedes it, with fans praising its characters, themes, and unabashed style since the original comic was released in the mid-2000s. The movie adaptation’s director, Edgar Wright, is also credited as an executive producer on the Scott Pilgrim Netflix anime, alongside Nira Park, Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, Adam Seigel, and Michael Bacall.
Although the Scott Pilgrim universe has gone largely dormant for new works, Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2020, with a re-release of the video game adaptation also arriving on modern gaming consoles early last year. Around the time of its anniversary, Wright teased that he had been hoping to turn Scott Pilgrim into an anime at some point, and now, he may finally get his wish. Scott Pilgrim seems tailor-made for the world of anime, but until more is ready to be announced, we’ll have to hope the Netflix and UCP deal holds strong.
