There isn’t much we haven’t seen from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings thanks to trailers and other teases, but this newest trailer definitely lets us see a lot. A lot of shirtless lead actor Simu Liu, alongside Awkwafina wondering exactly why he is shirtless. The teaser also features a few new clips but doesn’t tell us much new in general about the film.
This Shang Chi trailer, called “Need” (because trailers have names now), does focus a bit more on the family aspect of the film as Shang-Chi learns to face his past and his father, who isn’t such a good guy. In the movie, he will confront that past when he’s pulled back in by the Ten Rings organization and eventually, one assumes, become the next MCU superhero. There’s a bit more of what looks like a pretty awesome fight sequence on a trolly with a guy with a glowing blade for a hand, and then it’s a ton of clips we’ve already seen.
Unlike the slew of other Marvel films coming out, which seem to be criss-crossing with each other every which way, Shang-Chi appears to be standing on its own for now aside from what appears to be minor Wong and Abomination cameos. There’s no word of Dr. Strange popping up or a sudden Thor cameo out of the blue. That, of course, could change, especially given Marvel’s end-credits sequences, but for now, it’s kind of nice to not have to worry about more than a decade’s worth of continuity.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will release on September 3, 2021.
