There have been rumors and reports of a Silent Hill revival for some time, and more unconfirmed details are now coming via journalists and outlets like VGC. Chiefly, Silent Hill 2 may be getting a remake, and both a Silent Hill sequel and an episodic series are seemingly in the works as well.
NateTheHate, Jeff Grubb, and VGC each have sources suggesting a remake of Silent Hill 2 may be in the works at Bloober Team, the developer behind The Medium. The game will reportedly have new AI, animations, endings, and reworked puzzles, in addition to being a timed PlayStation exclusive.
Outside of this remake, there are rumblings of a Silent Hill episodic series, not unlike Supermassive Games’ The Dark Pictures Anthology. Annapurna Interactive may be publishing the title, and its diverse credits include such works as Outer Wilds and What Remains of Edith Finch.
In addition, a Japanese studio is reportedly developing a brand new game in the franchise. Images of this title were leaked and subsequently pulled by Konami last week, and VGC indicates those images may come from a P.T.-style teaser in development. The images looked very reminiscent of Resident Evil 7. Gematsu independently reported last year that Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions is the Japanese developer working on this new Silent Hill, but no other outlet has corroborated this.
Of course, take all of this information with a grain of salt. Some of the titles sound promising, though. I think an episodic series can work quite well for an established property like Silent Hill. However, the pictures of the sequel look kind of bland. And Bloober Team didn’t necessarily hit it out of the park with The Medium, which is something to keep in mind if it is doing a Silent Hill 2 remake. But it pays to be optimistic!
