SKALD: Against the Black Priory Is a Lovecraftian Horror RPG

SKALD: Against the Black Priory Raw Fury Scape-IT AS RPG Lovecraft Lovecraftian cosmic horror retro pixel art style

Publisher Raw Fury and developer Scape-IT AS have shared a new teaser trailer with gameplay for SKALD: Against the Black Priory, an RPG set in a dark fantasy world that incorporates Lovecraftian horror. The game’s cinematics showcase an awesome retro pixel art style that brings cosmic horror to life in a way we have not seen before. The rest of the pixel art is enjoyable too, in a quaint way, as it uses a limited color palette inspired by Commodore 64 to construct all sorts of scenes. The game even has an optional CRT filter to make it feel more retro.

Here is a short, vague synopsis of what to expect from the dark story:

The dragons stirs in the void and an empire trembles. The rule of the magi Lords is failing. Where now shall we place our faith? In the low cunning of the sell swords? Or in the golden dead to whom we offer prayers? Certainly not in the foul magical praxis of witches and lay sorcerers. No, this is our punishment. We woke the dragon and for us, there is no salvation.

You will create your main character and recruit from dozens of other characters to form a party. There are also myriad classes, feats, spells, and equipment to choose from. Combat is turn-based and grid-based with customizable difficulty settings. Choices you make will have ramifications on the rest of the story as well, so it sounds like SKALD will have a lot of replayability.

Watch the SKALD: Against the Black Priory teaser trailer and soak in the retro flavor.

SKALD: Against the Black Priory will launch in 2022 on PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam and GOG.
