Sanzaru Games gives an ever-so-slightly more specific release window for the long-awaited next installment of the Sly Cooper 3.
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will be arriving on PS3 sometime this fall, ending the series’ seven-year hiatus. Unfortunately, series creator, Sucker Punch Productions, isn’t involved. Instead the game is being developed by Sanzaru Games, the outfit responsible for Sly Cooper HD and porting Secret Agent Clank to the PS2.
In Thieves in Time the player control not only thieving raccoon, Sly, but his equally larcenous ancestors. Sly’s extended family, a few of which had tantalizing cameos in the original Sly Cooper game, get to rummage around various eras, stealing everything that isn’t nailed down and generally making nuisances of themselves, much like actual raccoons. Each character, from the ninja, Rioichi, to the medieval knight, Sir Galleth Cooper, brings a different set of skills to the game, but Sanzaru President, Glen Egan, insists that their various play-styles are designed to complement Sly’s stealthy skillset, rather than detract from it.
Thieves in Time will feature the open-world elements introduced in the second Sly Cooper game, rather than the raw platforming of the first, and will contain numerous collectable costumes that give Sly different powers.
The preview also mentions a feature that will thrill some gamers and appall others. When Sly is in the air, a tap of the circle button will have him land on a nearby platform “auto-magically.” Considering how forgiving Sly Cooper’s jumping mechanics have always been, making the platforming even easier seems a bit superfluous.
Regardless, I need to make room in my schedule this fall.
