Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie trailer Paramount Pictures The Game Awards 2021 TGA

Ready to go fast? Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has just dropped its first trailer during The Game Awards 2021, and it has plenty of the blue hedgehog speeding along — but this time alongside his faithful sidekick, Tails, and, surprise, Knuckles!

Of course, in the film Sonic doesn’t know either of these anthropomorphic animals, but as teased at the end of the first film, Tails is on a mission to find Sonic and clearly the world needs saving again. With Dr. Robotnik back with a more classic look and Knuckles showing up with it, it looks like Sega is pulling out all the callback stops, including shoving in a bi-plane and Chaos Emeralds. Here’s an official description of the film:

The world’s favorite blue hedgehog is back for a next-level adventure in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

Whatever the film turns out to be, let’s all just be really thankful we didn’t have to suffer through whatever the hell Tails and Knucles would have looked like if they had kept the original Sonic design.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will release on March 31, 2022, and till then, you can watch the movie trailer on loop.
