Sonic the Hedgehog Voice Actor Roger Craig Smith Returns to the Role

Roger Craig Smith has confirmed that he will return to play Sonic the Hedgehog in future game installments. The actor made the surprise announcement on Twitter, expressing his thanks to the Sonic the Hedgehog team and the fans who vocalized their support. What games Smith will act in has not been made clear, but he says that he’s excited for the community to see what’s in store for the Blue Blur’s future.

Smith had seemingly exited his 10-year run as Sonic the Hedgehog when he posted a broken blue heart and farewell message back in January, and he later discussed the matter in a way that made it sound like it had been his idea. Though Sonic has been voiced by other actors — most recently Ben Schwartz in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie — fans were surprised nonetheless. Now, with Roger Craig Smith and/or Sega reversing the decision, it seems Smith will continue as the voice actor of Sonic in video games for the foreseeable future.

We won’t have to wait long to hear more about Sonic the Hedgehog’s future, though, as Sega has announced plans to host a livestream event tomorrow called Sonic Central. The event announcement promises “a first look at some of our upcoming projects, partnerships, and events to celebrate Sonic’s 30th anniversary.” Sega has scheduled the presentation to begin at 9 a.m. PT / noon ET on the official Sonic YouTube channel.
