Sony Issues Warning Over Exploding Counterfeit Controllers

Is that PS3 controller genuine? It might be a good idea to check, as it could be potentially disastrous if it’s not.

It’s one thing to buy some third party console accessory and have it not work properly, but it’s quite another to have one catch fire or explode in your hand, especially if you didn’t know that it wasn’t the genuine article.

Sony has put out a consumer alert saying that consumers should be on the lookout for counterfeit controllers that look almost identical to official PS3 wireless controllers. It warns consumers to be careful when purchasing accessories from “uncertain sources,” as they may be unreliable and in some cases even dangerous. It adds that only official PS3 wireless controllers are supported by Sony, and that future updates may render third party peripherals inoperable.

It’s probably worth pointing out that the alert doesn’t say that the counterfeit controllers definitely will catch fire or explode, just that they could, and honestly, the controller is probably much more likely to just stop working than it is to detonate. It seems like there’s a teensy bit of spin on this statement, although the idea that authentic Sony accessories are the most reliable in the long run is probably true.
