Desperate Splinter Cell fans are getting another sign of hope, as an “adult animated series” based on the property seems to be on the way from Netflix. Variety reports that John Wick‘s Derek Kolstad will serve as writer and executive producer and is teaming up with the streaming giant to bring Ubisoft’s classic stealth franchise to the realm of animation. Netflix sounds to be confident in the plan, too, as Variety’s sources say the show has already received a two-season, 16-episode order. Though it remains unclear what role (if any) series protagonist Sam Fisher will play in the show, fans of the series will likely be happy to receive any news at all.
Ubisoft previously announced other non-Splinter Cell animated video game adaptations late last year, including Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Vibe, Hungry Shark Squad, and a tween-targeting series based in Watch Dogs. There hasn’t been much of an update on any of those shows since their reveal.
Netflix has made somewhat of an impact in the world of animated video game adaptations in the last few years, with the massively popular Castlevania series recently concluding its third season. The Splinter Cell series is being described as an adult-aimed animation, though it is unclear if it will be quite as visceral as Castlevania.
Splinter Cell has been without a mainline video game entry since Splinter Cell: Blacklist in 2013. Though there have been rumors and mentions of Sam Fisher through the years, there is still no concrete information regarding when Ubisoft will make a new mainline entry in the video game series.
