When the creator of Rick and Morty teams up with the guys behind The Stanley Parable, you know you’re in for something weird.
Squanchtendo is not just a hilarious Rick and Morty joke, it’s an actual VR game studio created by Justin Roliand himself. Despite only being founded a couple months ago, the studio has already released its first game, a free VR experience called Accounting. And if being created by the mind behind Rick and Morty wasn’t weird enough, Accounting is actually a collaboration between Squanchtendo and Crows Crows Crows – the folks behind The Stanley Parable.
The game is available right now on Steam. “The modern field of Accountancy is a serious and honorable profession. Many human beings have spent their lives toiling over the hard science of numbers. Thousands have died so that we may get to the level of understanding that we have today. Thousands have died. However, as Accountants and Numbersmiths embraced the abacus and the calculator, today we must embrace the latest technological advancement,” wrote the developer on the game’s product page.
If that sounds confusing, that’s because it is. Even after watching the gameplay video I still can’t figure out what Accounting is about. You seem to be a regular old accountant at the start, but at some point you put on VR goggles inside the simulation, which means you are in a simulation inside a simulation. Wubalubadubdub!
It certainly has that trademark weirdness from both of its auteurs, and i’m excited to see what the studio cooks up next.
