Star Renegades Is a Beautiful Roguelite Strategy RPG – Review in 3 Minutes

Recommended Videos

Star Renegades is a tactical, squad-based roguelite by developer Massive Damage, Inc. and publisher Raw Fury. You lead a band of misfit rebels fighting for the freedom of the galaxy against an evil authoritarian empire that hops between realities in a cycle of endless destruction. To stop the cycle, you must fight your way through three planets to the take on the empire’s mothership.

Every run, you have three days to explore the dungeon to find gear to equip or DNA to level up your party to give you the best chance of succeeding. I rarely felt like the maps lacked resources. Instead, the procedural generation of the maps created unique challenges every run, encouraging me to prioritize resource collection that was specific to the layout of my current playthrough. When you die and start a new run, only two of the four resources carry over, which can be used to unlock new companions or gear types that can offer greater advantage in the next run.

The game may need some fine tuning, but Massive Damage, Inc. has committed to the long-term development and polishing of the title. In the meantime, Star Renegades is gorgeous to look at and a damn good roguelite that keeps you coming back for more.

Star Renegades is available now on PC and Xbox Games Pass for $24.99 with a 10% discount at launch.
