Brothers Brick’s Chibi Micro Contest has produced brilliant works of LEGO adorableness.
I’ve never had much of a taste for chibi-style art. It’s an aversion that I blame wholly on my overactive preference for things epic and gritty. There’s just something about my brain that rejects art when it passes a certain threshold of cuteness. As with most things though, I do make some exceptions to that rule. While I’d be hard-pressed to explain exactly why, LEGO chibi doesn’t inspire the same sort of eye-rolling in me. Perhaps I just have an especial appreciation for the skill that goes into taking something big, shrinking it down, and attractively rebuilding it with LEGO bricks. Or maybe I just really like LEGO.
Regardless of my own personal reasons for enjoying LEGO chibi, I’d strongly recommend checking out some of the pieces being submitted to the Chibi Micro Contest recently launched by the fine folks at Brothers Brick. Challenging participants to create their own chibi builds, it’s already produced a collection of impressive submissions based on popular franchises like Star Wars, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica and Aliens.
The contest itself will be open to submissions until January 4th. After that, three winners will be chosen to receive a series of rewards. Among the prizes being offered are a Fan Expo-exclusive Star Wars: Rebels set along with an assortment of other Star Wars microfighters donated by The LEGO Group. Builders have been encouraged to submit as many entries as they want, but can only win one prize. All entries must use actual LEGO pieces (no digital builds) and cannot include bricks built by third party companies. Take a look at some of the submissions and let us know what you think.
