Publisher EA and developer Respawn Entertainment officially announced a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order back in January, alongside two other Star Wars projects Respawn has in development. Now, according to GamesBeat journalist Jeff Grubb on his Giant Bomb podcast Grubbsnax (via VGC), Star Wars Jedi 2 is targeting a 2023 release date and will only receive a new-gen release, meaning for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, and presumably PC. Additionally, Fallen Order is reportedly being dropped from the name for the sequel.
The 2023 release date is reportedly part of the rationale for why Star Wars Jedi 2 will only appear on new-gen platforms: It should be enough time that players who want a PS5 or an Xbox Series X should finally be able to get their hands on one. Plus, focusing on new-gen consoles will allow Respawn to take fuller advantage of that more powerful hardware. Games that need to also run on PlayStation 4 (or, in many cases, Nintendo Switch) will not be capable of the technical wizardry a PlayStation 5 can perform, such as the instantaneous dimension-hopping in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has gone on to sell more than 10 million units since its release in 2019, so EA will be looking to do that all over again with Star Wars Jedi 2 in 2023. Meanwhile, Respawn is also working on a Star Wars first-person shooter and a strategy game.
There are several other large Star Wars projects in development at other publishers, such as Skydance New Media’s cinematic action adventure, Massive Entertainment’s open-world game, and whatever Quantic Dream’s Star Wars: Eclipse turns out to be. There is even heavy speculation the franchise will appear in Kingdom Hearts IV.
