KOTOR Remake Reportedly Changes Developer to Saber Interactive

KOTOR remake Aspyr paused development indefinitely Saber Interactive developer shift Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake KOTOR should not be constrained by Disney Star Wars canon

Last month, Bloomberg reported that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake development had stopped at developer Aspyr Media, and it stated there was a possibility that Saber Interactive would take over the development. Today, Jason Schreier at Bloomberg is reporting that Saber Interactive has indeed taken over development of KOTOR Remake. Specifically, a studio located in Eastern Europe has reportedly taken over the game. Both Aspyr and Saber are owned by Embracer Group, which makes the KOTOR Remake developer shift slightly more palatable.

In fact, Embracer apparently made indirect reference to this shift last week, when it stated in a financial report, “One of the Group’s AAA projects has transitioned to another studio within the Group. This was done to ensure the quality bar is where we need it to be for the title.” That report further claimed that it did not expect “any material delays” as a result of the switch, but that claim seems laughable, as a switch in developer all but guarantees substantial delays for a game.

Otherwise, seemingly no further details are known beyond what was previously reported. Aspyr evidently just didn’t have the proper resources and management to develop a project of the scale of KOTOR Remake, and Embracer Group is trusting Saber Interactive has the capabilities to finish the job. Saber had already joined on to the development of the game with Aspyr this past May, according to Bloomberg. Saber has an eclectic output, including titles like SnowRunner and Evil Dead: The Game.

Meanwhile, Embracer is undergoing another massive spending spree, including purchasing Limited Run Games, the entire Lord of the Rings IP, and much more.
