When you make a planet that has essentially been one giant city for thousands of years, where the hell do you start? This latest Star Wars: The Old Republic developer video shows us the building of the capital world of Coruscant.
There are few planets in Star Wars’ galaxy far, far away as storied as Coruscant – which is slightly amusing, given that it never once appeared in the original movie trilogy (other than a brief appearance added to the ending of the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi). Since then, though, Coruscant has been featured prominently in all three installments of the prequel trilogy, is central to many of the books in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and so on and so forth.
This, of course, makes perfect sense seeing as how the city-world of Coruscant is the figurative center of the galaxy – it’s the capital world for the entire Republic. The Jedi Council convenes here, the Senate is located here, and it is the uber-metropolis to dwarf all other pretenders to the “grandest of cities” throne. Naturally, building such a world is a rather monumental task for the development team at BioWare, particularly since Coruscant hasn’t been featured in either of the previous Knights of the Old Republic games. Oh sure, we’ve had city-planets like Telos and Nar Shaddaa, but neither of those were Coruscant … nor were they MMOGs.
I’ve loved all of the Developer Diaries thus far, and this one is no exception. On the other hand, seeing how Coruscant is shaping up makes me sad to think that we probably won’t be able to get into one of those little airspeeders and zip around the giant buildings the size of Manhattan. How awesome would that have been?
