Microsoft has released details about its plan to help out Xbox 360 owners short on storage space in the weeks leading up to the Xbox Live Dashboard upgrade in November, including an offer for free hardware upgrades for eligible customers.
Microsoft announced yesterday that the November Dashboard update, better known as the New Xbox Experience, will require at least 128 megabytes of storage space, which could be a problem for owners of the Arcade version of the console, or even worse, the older Core model. The Xbox 360 Arcade lacks a hard drive, including only a 256 megabyte memory module instead, while the Core came with no storage options whatsoever.
“A hard drive is recommended for the optimal experience, to take advantage of some new features, and to be able to enjoy the great movies, TV shows and games available on Xbox Live,” the company said in a statement to Xbox 360 Fanboy. “While we expect the majority of consumers to download the New Xbox Experience without a problem, a small percentage of Xbox 360 owners do not have enough memory to accommodate the update. To help ensure all Xbox Live members are able to download the New Xbox Experience and enjoy its new features, Microsoft will be offering storage solutions to the Xbox Live community.”
Those “storage solutions,” the company has revealed, will be offered to qualifying Xbox owners in the form of either a free 512 megabye memory module, or a refurbished 20 gigabyte hard drive for $19.99 on its own, or $29.99 with three months of Xbox Live Gold membership. To determine eligibility, Xbox Live users simply need to go to xboxstorageupgrade.com and enter their console i.d. and serial number.
