Neverwinter Nights has been acknowledged for trailblazing the MMOG genre.

At the 59th Annual Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards held during the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) honored Stormfront Studios with an Emmy for its 1991 breakthrough title Neverwinter Nights, the first graphical massively-multiplayer online roleplaying game. Sony Online Entertainment and Blizzard Entertainment were also recognized for their work in furthering the genre’s growth with Everquest and World of Warcraft, respectively.

The award was presented by Gary Shapiro, president and Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Electronics Association, legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Peter Price, president and Chief Executive Officer of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The Technology & Engineering Awards are granted to those who advance the use, creativity and adaptation of technology that enhances consumer experiences with media. Last year, Nintendo was recognized for its development of the directional pad.

Neverwinter Nights Lead Designer Don Daglow, accepted the award for Stormfront and its publishers, AOL and Wizards of the Coast. “These games are not just entertainment. They build new kinds of communities and create deep people-to-people relationships. They influence people’s lives in the same way as great books, inspiring movies and iconic television shows, and we’re grateful to the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for this honor.”
