The mysterious recordings raise a lot of questions about just what is going on in Arkham City.
With the release of Arkham City looming every closer, the marketing for the game has taken a turn for the strange, both figuratively and literally. Rocksteady has seemingly created a series of audio recordings of the various inhabitants of the Arkham City – and at least one city official – talking with Hugo Strange, who oversees the urban prison.
The first recording is a taped conversation, first between Strange and Gotham’s Mayor, and then between Strange and the Riddler. Strange seems to have the Mayor – who is the former warden of Arkham Asylum – under some kind of hypnotic spell. After Strange puts the phone down, the Riddler hacks something in the doctor’s office – presumably his TV – and strikes up a conversation.
In the second recording, Strange is talking to Oswald Cobblepot, better known as the Penguin, about his hatred for the Wayne family. Penguin shoots down the idea that he’s just another inmate in Arkham City, saying that he runs the place. He also hands over a list of favors he wants Strange to do. It also suggests that Bruce Wayne has gone missing, probably because Batman is busy watching Arkham City.
The first recording came through a tweet by from MovieViral.com. The tweet contained a series of numbers and letters, which someone realized was a YouTube ID. In the video’s description was a rather cryptic comment – (1)Can (5)you (26)defeat (20)a (_)mind (21)such (7)as (5)mine(7)(5)(7)?” – #EN.” When the numbers were converted into letters and put into YouTube, it revealed the second video, which had another riddle: “How do you protect yourself when its raining bullets” – #EN[sic].”
It’s a pretty safe bet that figuring out the second riddle will lead to another recording, but it’s going to take some pretty hefty thinking to figure out which direction the clue is pointing. Interestingly, the first video has two question marks for a title, and the second has three. That might suggest there is actually an earlier video to find, although it very well could mean nothing at all.
Batman: Arkham City comes out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 10th.
