The sequel to the latest localized Tales game takes place in the same world, but it’s a new Tales.
Namco Bandai released the English trailer for JRPG Tales of Xillia 2 at the Tokyo Game Show. The one-minute trailer is dark and teases an ominous event. Characters fall down with widened eyes, a small girl stares ahead in shock and screams as a man tightly grips his dagger and cuts through the air. Tales of Xillia 2 begins where Tales of Xillia left off, taking place one year after the events of the first game and follows the main character Ludger Kresnik and a young girl he meets named Elle Marta. The two characters meet on a train, and because of an accident their lives suddenly change.
Each Tales game has a central theme. For example, Tales of Xillia was about convictions, whereas Tales of Xillia 2 is all about choice. The voiceover in the trailer declares, “Everything rides upon this one choice. You alone must make the decision.” In the game, the player makes decisions as Ludger, and the story changes depending on player’s decisions — a game mechanic that has become quite popular recently.
Combat is largely the same, feeling more like an action game than turn-based RPGs. Ludger can switch between dual blades, a sledgehammer, and dual pistols. Characters from Tales of Xillia will return for the sequel.
Tales of Xillia 2 releases in the west for the PS3 in 2014, two years after its Japanese release. Tales of Xillia came out on Aug. 6 in North America and Aug. 9 in Europe.
