Publisher Playism and developer Orbital Express have given Tasomachi: Behind the Twilight, a serene adventure game set in a far-Eastern world, a release date of April 14, 2021 on PC via Steam and GOG. A trailer showcasing many of the game’s lush environments, music, and gameplay was published to celebrate the announcement, which you can view below.
Work at Orbital Express is led by solo developer nocras, an artist credited with work on major AAA releases, such as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Pokémon Sword and Shield. Elements of those games can be found throughout Tasomachi: Behind the Twilight and there’s a photo mode for those hoping to capture some of its beauty, but the game is said to offer more than just its atmosphere.
Players take control of Yukumo and can double jump, dash, and airdrop their way through varied environments. The experience is aimed to be low-key, with little danger and no life gauges to worry about, leaving players to find collectibles to their heart’s content.
Besides the release date announcement, Nocras explained his approach with Tasomachi: Behind the Twilight in a press release: “I enjoy making 2D and 3D art for myself and others, but I felt a need to express myself and the beauty of the world, which I could only do properly through a video game of my own. It also feels like the world unfairly abandoned the collect-a-thon platformer, and I want to bring that genre back with beautiful visuals that create the same sense of melancholy and joy that I originally felt in my youth.”
Meanwhile, the music is composed by Japanese musician Ujico, who has amassed more than 1 million subscribers on YouTube.
Tasomachi: Behind the Twilight is currently only scheduled to release on PC.
