OtherSide Entertainment has officially confirmed that Tencent will oversee the remainder of work on System Shock 3. The indie studio revealed the change on its Twitter account, explaining that work on System Shock 3 had become “challenging” but believes in Tencent’s ability to carry the series’s next entry forward. Today’s news comes just days after System Shock website domains were transferred to Tencent.
“We are happy to announce that Tencent will be taking the System Shock franchise forward,” the Twitter statement reads. “As a smaller Indie studio, it had been challenging for us to carry the project on our own. We believe Tencent’s deep capabilities and expertise as a leading game company will bring the franchise to new heights.”
Fans should know that Tencent will only oversee System Shock 3, not the series as a whole. Nightdive Studios still owns the rights to the IP and will release its original System Shock remake as planned.
OtherSide Entertainment has been notably quiet when it comes to updates for System Shock 3. After separating from publisher Starbreeze in early 2019, the studio went on to release a pre-alpha trailer for the project later that year. Since then, the studio has been largely silent amid various worrying reports and rumors.
How Tencent’s involvement will affect System Shock 3 in the long run remains to be seen, but fans can at least rest easy knowing the game has funding now.
